Overview of positionOur client was established in 1997, by the General Assembly, and as per the Policy on Mine Action and Effective Coordination (A/53/496, 1998) is the established coordinator of mine action within the United Nations system. Our client supports the vision of "a world free of the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance, where individuals and communities live in a safe environment conducive to development, and where mine survivors are fully integrated into their societies."

Our client is a unit within the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) within the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). Our client's main headquarters is in New York with a sub -office in Geneva. Our client provides direct support and assistance in the areas of Explosive Hazard (EH) mitigation to 18 countries/territories/missions, has a standby rapid response capacity and global technical advisors in the field of Improvised Explosive Devices and (IED) Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM).

The Iraq program was formally established in June 2015, at the request of the UN Under - Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Iraq, to lead the efforts to mitigate explosive threats in the country, as well as to support the enhancement of national and regional mine action capacities. Our client is supporting multiple layers of operations under the Iraq Strategic Plan which focuses on three main components:

1. Explosive Hazard Management
2. Capacity Enhancement
3. Risk Education

The post of ‘Risk Education Team Assistant will support the delivery of the overall objectives of the Risk Education component.
Role objectivesOur Client is looking for a skilled individual fluent in Kurdish and English and/or Arabic to support the Risk Education (RE) department with administrative, logistics, liaison and technical services. Interpersonal and diplomatic skills is a requirement for this post, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced environment whilst managing multiple tasks with competing priorities. The post will require frequent travel within Iraq. The assistant will be based in Erbil and must be fluent in Kurdish and English, with Arabic fluency being a strong advantage.

The RE Assistants, under the direct supervision of the RE Project Manager, will be responsible for the following tasks:

Assist the Risk Education department to organize and coordinate activities with government and mine action partners including training, awareness raising events, and capacity development initiatives.

Liaise with the National Mine Action Authorities and other Mine Action actors and actively participate in relevant meetings, translating between English and Arabic/Kurdish when required.

Liaise with other governmental ministries such as the Ministry of Education and other humanitarian actors to further develop collaborations between Risk Education and other humanitarian activities where pertinent.

Participate in quality assurance and control visits with the Risk Education Consultants and Project Manager.

Provide technical assistance and advice to improve Risk Education capacity in Iraq.

Proactively assist in the development and implementation of the Risk Education strategy including areas of expansion and innovation of RE activities to reach a wider audience and impact.

Translate Risk Education materials and documents from English to Arabic and Kurdish.

Prepare and input into Risk Education proposals, reports, minutes and other internal and external documents as required.

Manage, organise and maintain the Risk Education information management database.

Provide any other support such as administration, logistics and grant management as tasked by the Risk Education Project Manager.

Expected outputThe personnel will report on a weekly basis on the work carried out in support of the Risk Education to the Risk Education Project Manager. The Risk Education assistants are expected to contribute to the smooth running of Risk Education operations, particularly liaising and developing professional relations with Risk Education partners and stakeholders and contributing to advancing Risk Education innovation in Iraq
Project reportingThe personnel will report on a weekly basis on the work carried out in support of the Risk Education work to the Risk Education Project Manager.
Key competenciesExperience:

Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable relevant experience in Iraq.

3 years of experience working as in Mine Action on Community Liaison is desired.

Prior experience in Humanitarian Mine Action is highly desirable.

Prior experience as an Interpreter English/Arabic/Kurdish is highly desirable.

Prior experience in communications, advertising, large scale event organisation or similar is an advantage.

Excellent understanding of local communities, their values and norms is desired
Experience in field operations.

Good computer skills including proficiency in MS Office package is required.


Fluency in English, Kurdish and Arabic Languages is essential.
